Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today...

I have been to all sorts of weddings in the last few years. Some in churches, some in gardens, some on the beach, and even one in a theatre. Although every couple adds their own flair and personal touches to their special day, each is a spectacle in its own way. There is usually music, "costuming" of sorts, and often a large amount of decorations to create a certain environment. At the past few weddings that I have attended with my family, my mom and I have started critiquing them and discussing which components of the ceremonies or receptions we liked or disliked. Often we talk about the color choices or the flowers and bridesmaid dresses. I am in no way cynical of marriage, but I would agree that a wedding ceremony--and usually the reception that follows--is a production or presentation that includes some level of spectacle.

Perhaps one of the best examples of this is a wedding that I have yet to attend. My mom's best friend's daughter is having a destination wedding in Mexico this Spring, and from what I have heard of the planning it looks like it will be quite extravagant. They have multiple packages for the different details of the wedding (colors, decorations, meals, etc) and rules covering what can or cannot be added as a personal touch (professional musicians, outside flower companies, etc) so to make this ceremony personal, the family has to jump through some hoops... but they are also tempted by the extras that are offered. While I do not think I will see pyrotechnics at this particular wedding, here is one example of a ceremony at the resort:

I think it will be a good one to attend. I'm interested to see what they add to their personal production.
