I wonder if spectacle is just something so out of the ordinary that we cannot find any way to interact with or think about it. I believe that there are two ways that normalcy can become a spectacle; through contrast and through time.
The stereotypical suburbia is a neighborhood where homogeneity is compulsory; every house is the same, every lawn is manicured and anything out of the ordinary is the topic of conversation. A setting like this can turn anything strange into a spectacle.
This difference between spectacle and normalcy can also come through the passage of time. The Incan walls are examples of normalcy becoming spectacle over time. Today we think of this type of engineering as spectacular yet it was commonplace in the Inca's time. It is also possible that this example is also spectacular through contrast because engineering like this is now very difficult.
I love the Edward Scissorhands still. Perfect example of the ridiculous nature of normalcy.
