The Red Carpet

It is award season in Hollywood. Many stars have walked down the red carpet at the Golden Globes and the SAGs and many more will walk down at the Oscars and the Grammys. Award show planners put a great deal of time into planning the lay out of the carpet setting up Oscar statues along the way, creating interview platforms, and setting up stages for pre-show music. Planners have turned award shows into 4+ hour adding pre red carpets, red carpets, post show parties, post-post show parties, etc. milking the show for every minute they can get.

Journalists from everywhere descend upon a red carpet with a voracious appetite for fame and fashion. Live coverage of the red carpet can be found on multiple channels and photos from the red carpet are plastered all over magazines, newspapers, and blogs. Every style critic has a best and worst dressed list from every event. Even those who are not avidly into fashion will get in on the fun of commenting on celebrities' outfits choices exclaiming with disgust "I can't believe she wore THAT!" or oohing and awing over the celebrities who got it right. Interviewers chat with celebrities about being nominated, the competition, future plans, and, most importantly, who are you wearing. The red carpet revolves around appearance and the flashing lights capture every moment of it.

Celebrities strive to be original and some award show are filled with stunts and outfits that push the boundaries of more traditional award shows. The MTV Video Music Awards are a classic example of some of the craziest moments on red carpets. Lil' Kim's outfit at the 99 VMAs or celebrities arriving in yachts at the 2004 VMAs instead of the traditional limousine. Some stars will do anything to get our attention on the red carpet and we gladly oblige. The red carpet is just one facet of the spectacle that is celebrity.
