Here are two of my favorite examples of spectacle. Both are drum and bugle corps competing in the Drum Corps International Championships in August, 2006. These corps are groups of musicians and dancers (the colorguard) who tour around the United States for three months during the summer, performing the same show nearly every day. Since my high school marching band was modeled after these types of performances, I know that it takes hundreds of hours of hard work on the field just to perfect the visual aspects of the show. Music is a whole other thing to take on in itself. Putting them together is what makes spectacles such as this so amazing. The first example is the ballad section of a show entitled "Faust", in which both the musicians and the colorguard recreate the German legend of Faust. Everything about this performance is powerful, including the choreography and the music. The second example is from a show entitled "Machine", and it's obvious what the corps is trying to imitate here.
