Religion and spectacle go hand in hand: ceremony, ritual, tradition. It's hard to think of a religion that has no element of spectacle in it. These religious spectacles even often have the performer/audience relationship built into them, although often everyone is a "participant," which I think is also a key trait of a spectacle.
